The Concerned Government

During dinner today, KC shared a recent local news highlight – the latest installation from the Singapore government.

The government will be installing card readers on some of the selected (first phase) crossings in the city, beginning from tomorrow. These card readers are designated for elderly pedestrians. They will be able to get more time to cross the road once they tap their senior concession cards on the card reader. Cool eh? Other than bus and MRT commuters, pedestrians made up of quite a fair population in the city. Presently, pedestrians get about 17 seconds on a four-lane crossing and 21 seconds on a six-lane crossing. Senior citizens will now get another 3 to 5 seconds on the street.

The reason I am sharing this is because I was very surprised to hear the news and the first thing that came to my mind was, “What a concerned government!”. Besides being impressed with how much the government cares about their citizens, I personally think this is one innovative idea; one that benefits all and continuously making use of the technology. They could have just increase the crossing times for the selected roads, saving much effort, but they didn’t. More admiration, to the concerned government!

F1 craze

People everywhere! The MRTs, buses and city were all crowded with people. I could hardly grab a pole or hold the handgrip in the MRT when I made my way to City Hall after work. This must be an event that should not be missed, I thought. The real race will be on Sunday while yesterday’s highlight was F1 practice sessions 1 and 2, and the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia practice session.

I am glad that I was part of the magic although I am no F1 fan. The night was simply spectacular and I enjoyed every bit of it. We took almost 700 shots in the span of 3 hours! After reviewing the photos, I found that half of them are failed shots and some shots I thought were good did not turn out that well once loaded into my notebook.

Here goes :-)

Notice the fence? This is one of my mistake, still wondering how to overcome this to take a better shot.

I am an Amateur!

I finally attended the Nikon D5000 Workshop yesterday evening (after anticipating this for more than one week)!

It is not a photography class, but rather a get-to-know-your-D5000 workshop. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Steven Yee. Overall, his class was very informative and he is one funny guy hehe. I must say that I understand my camera better now :-) For a start, I really did not know that there is a distance limit to a camera’s built-in flash and D-zai is capable of illuminating up to the focal length of 18mm. Now I know why do people buy flashes. *blushes*

On a side note, I felt a bit funny when I first stepped into the class. It was like… eh, I’m a student again! Hehe, it was fun though. Almost everyone there was new to the hobby and the D5000 was our very first DSLR. The funniest moment was when Steven lauded, “Ladies and gentlemen, now get your cameras out and remove your lenses”. Everyone did exactly just that; opened our bags, carried our babies out and detached our lenses. Steven then switched on the fluorescent light above him and instructed us to see through our lenses. He taught us how to check for unusual objects on our lenses, such as fungus.

Here are some shots taken during the class. They are shots taken randomly when requested by the instructor, hence, not much preparation and composition involved.

Some great shots hung in the classroom. Of all the pictures, I particularly liked the one in the center bottom position, the one with monks as the subject. There is light shining behind the monk who is standing in the middle.

“Ladies and gentlemen, set your ISO at 200 and focus on me!” (starts flapping his arms)

“Now, set your ISO at 1600 and focus on me!” (okay, this one didn’t turn out good). Steven wanted to show us that you can achieve better quality by tuning your ISO when shooting moving objects. The higher the ISO, the faster the shutter speed.

4D3N Vacation

Thanks to the Raya season, I have been granted a 4-days 3-nights vacation! I’ve never had a longer holiday than this one since my last Cambodia trip (I think). Upon reaching KL in the wee hours of the morning on Saturday, I told mom that I was craving for nasi lemak. She brought Pei Yee and I to a mamak nearby our house. It was 5 plus when we reached there. To my disappointment, they did not have nasi lemak.

After breakfast, I took a short nap and later rushed to Mid Valley to meet my dear friend, Ying Ying. She was there with her nicely packed Mille Crepe, waiting at the cinema entrance already. She had earlier mentioned that she would bake a Mille Crepe for me and she chose to bake a different flavor this time, Cheese Flavored Mille Crepe. We watched UP. Thank god they were still playing the movie. I thought I would have to miss this movie since it has been showing for quite some time already. Next, I went shopping alone in the mall. I was on a quest to search for a nice home for D-zai but I just could not find one.

On Sunday morning, I had to crawl out of bed at about 5:45 AM. My brother and I accompanied Mom and our uncle and aunts to perform some religious virtues. When things were finally done, I told my brother that I wanted to try my luck at Lowyat Plaza. To my surprise, he said he would accompany me there. I couldn’t remember when was the last time I went shopping with my brother, I mean, just the two of us. We walked for at least 3 hours plus inside Lowyat Plaza and Sungei Wang without buying anything. He knows I am such a fussy person when it comes to shopping. I would spend weeks, going in and out of malls to find the backpack of my choice or a pair of shoes that I like. I really appreciate his patience with me hehe.

It was another early day on Monday. We woke up at 6:30 AM and departed to the market in Semenyih to meet Mom’s friend before we embarked on our journey to Morib! The journey to Morib was not a long one. I had little to expect prior to the trip. People often say Morib beach is polluted. However, it is not like what I’ve heard. I was awed. The beach was clean and the sea water was okayy. However, the restrooms were ewww.. We spent about 2 hours at the beach. Next, we had seafood for lunch. I guess that is a must-have there. We ordered sotong, butter prawn, fish, fishball soup and la-la.

That was supposed to be the end of our half-day Raya trip but we decided to stop by at the famous Lover’s Bridge at Tanjung Sepat. The sea view was very fascinating. I could not imagine how beautiful it would be during sunset. Wish I would have the chance to frequent that place another time to enjoy the sunset.

Photographs appreciation time!
P/s: Lots of photos to be posted this time hehe. Hope I have enough bandwidth to support this :D
